Dr. A. S. Karthikeyan is a specialist in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and ocular genetics. After completing his medical education at the world renowned Stanley Medical College, he pursued postgraduate work in ophthalmology at India's first and the world's second eye hospital, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Chennai. He received the "Best Resident" award.

Subsequently, he completed the "Diplomate of National Board" at the Aravind Eye Care System, one of India's and the world's leading eye care models. He came first (national level) and was awarded the Fellowship of National Board (FNB) in pediatric ophthalmology. He was awarded FRCS by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He established and developed the pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology services at Lumbini Eye Institute, Nepal. He has been trained at several world-renowned institutes (pediatric neuro-ophthalmology at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins; retinoblastoma at Birmingham Children's Hospital, UK; and ocular genetics at Wills Eye Institute).

He has been invited to speak at several national and international congresses. He has significant publications in peer-reviewed international journals. He has authored a book and several book chapters. He has international work experience and has contributed immensely to several eye care projects and programs in Nepal, India, Tibet, Tanzania and Cambodia.
