Fred CHEN (Australia)

Fred Chen, MBBS (Hons), PhD, FRANZCO is a clinician-scientist at the Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science, The University of Western Australia. After completing vitreoretinal and medical retina fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and receiving a PhD in retinal pigment epithelium transplantation at the University College of London, Dr. Chen returned to Perth to establish the Ocular Tissue Engineering Laboratory at the Lions Eye Institute. His clinical and research interests are in retinal imaging, visual psychophysics, image analysis, vitreoretinal surgery, clinical trials in dry age-related macular degeneration, management of retinal degeneration and stem cell disease modelling.

Dr. Chen has published over 80 original papers in international peer-reviewed journals, co-authored 6 review articles and delivered more than 20 invited lectures worldwide. He is the site principal investigator for 10 clinical trials and cohort studies in the areas of macular degeneration, retinal dystrophy and psychophysics test validation. He has received several awards, fellowships and grants from Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC), Western Australian State Government, Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA), Retina Australia, Bayer, Novartis and other philanthropic institutions. Dr. Chen is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He is a current board member of the ORIA, and he has served on grant review panel for ORIA and NH&MRC.
