Makoto ARAIE (Japan)

Makoto Araie is director of Kanto Central Hospital and the Mutual Aid Association of Public School Teachers. He is professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo; visiting professor at the Institute of Medical Science, Tokyo Medical University; and visiting professor at Saitama Medical University. His areas of interest include ocular blood flow, normal tension glaucoma, pharmacokinetics and population-based study.

Prof. Araie has received the Suda Prize from the Japan Glaucoma Society (1992), Alcon Research Institute Award (1993), Japan Ophthalmological Society Council Award (1999), Japan Ophthalmological Society Award (2010), Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Jose Rizal Medal (2012), World Glaucoma Association Founder's Award (2013) and APGS Asia-Pacific Award (2014).

His leadership positions include Executive Committee member of the Glaucoma Research Society (2003-2008; 2012-present), president of the Japanese Society for Ocular Pharmacology (2004-2006), president of the Japan Glaucoma Society (2006-2014), president of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society (2007-2009), president of the Asia-Oceanic Glaucoma Society (2007-present), council member of APAO (2003-present), president of the World Glaucoma Association (2010-2011), vice president of APAO (2012-2015) and president of the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (2014-present).
He has served as editor-in-chief of Folia Japonica de Ophthalmologica Clinica (2008-present) and is a member of the editorial boards of the Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology (1996-present), American Journal of Ophthalmology (2001-2004), Journal of Glaucoma (2006-present), International Review of Glaucoma (2008-present) and Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (2012-present).
