Ravi RAVINDRAN (India)

Dr. Ravi Ravindran started his ophthalmology practice in 1987 under the guidance of Dr. G. Venkataswamy, founder of the Aravind Eye Care System. From this beginning, Dr. Ravindran was later involved in starting Aravind Eye Hospitals in Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Pondicherry, fulfilling the mission of the Aravind Eye Care System to serve the eye care needs of millions globally. During this period he was also involved in starting and popularizing manual small incision cataract surgery in Aravind hospitals and around the region.

After serving as Chief Medical Officer at the Aravind Eye Hospitals in Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Pondicherry for around 20 years, Dr. Ravindran became chairman of the Aravind Eye Care System in July 2010. He was involved in making changes to standardize "quality eye care" across the Aravind Eye Care System. Apart from managing and mentoring key leaders of the institution, his fields of interest include patient safety and quality assurance. He is involved in teaching eye health management courses leading to capacity building at other eye hospitals. He has presented papers at numerous international and national conferences on both the clinical and managerial aspects of eye care.

He has been an active member of the ophthalmological society of Tamil Nadu state and also the All India Ophthalmological Society for the past 25 years. He served as a regional co-chair for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness from 2004 to 2012 and also as president of city ophthalmological associations. Currently he is a board member of VISION 2020 Right to Sight India (since 2008), chairman of the International Relations Committee of the All India Ophthalmological Society and also serves on the panel for standardizing treatment guidelines for ophthalmology in India. He is a recipient of several national and international awards.
